5 Things I've Thought as a Mom (and a Boise Family Photographer) Before Booking Family Photos
Over the past year, any time I’m trying to get Henry out the door. One shoe has vanished. He wanted another snack, even though we'd just eaten. Messy bun, and the diaper bag was somehow missing the one thing I actually needed.
As I buckled him into his car seat, I caught myself laughing. "How would I ever get us ready for family photos today?"
And then it hit me. If I think that, and I'm a family photographer... how many other moms are thinking the exact same thing?
Maybe that's you.
Maybe you've searched for a family photographer in Boise, dreamed about photos in the foothills, the Sawtooths, or McCall, maybe even started filling out an inquiry form. And then closed the tab, because life just felt like too much.
If that's where you are, there's something I want you to know first.
You're not behind. You're not failing. You're not the only mom who's looked at family photos and thought, "Maybe next year."
I know those thoughts because I've had them too. They're exactly why I photograph families the way I do.
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
1. "I don't know if I'm worth being in the photos."
You probably wouldn't say it quite like that. It usually sounds more like...
"Maybe after I lose a little weight."
"I just don't feel like myself right now."
"Let's just get pictures of the kids."
I hear those words often. But underneath them, I hear something else.
You've spent months, maybe years, making sure everyone else is okay. You're the one remembering the appointments, packing the snacks, buying the birthday gifts, keeping everyone fed and where they need to be. Somewhere along the way, you quietly stepped out from in front of the camera. Not because you stopped mattering. Because everyone else came first.
I've felt every bit of this.
There have been seasons where I wanted to wait until I felt more like myself. I stepped into the frame anyway. Partly for me. Mostly for Henry.
Because one day, he won't care what size jeans I wore. He'll care that I was there.
And one day, your children will feel the same. They won't study those photos wondering if your hair was perfect. They'll be looking for you. The way you held them. The way you laughed. The way you looked at them when they weren't paying attention.
You belong in your family's story, exactly as you are today.
2. "I'm afraid my kids are going to make me look like a bad mom.”
No parent has ever said those exact words to me. But I've seen the apologetic smile. The whispered "he's usually not like this," or "I'm so sorry."
Please don't apologize.
Toddlers have big feelings. Kids get tired. Teenagers roll their eyes. That's not a reflection of your parenting. That's childhood.
I don't expect perfection, because perfection isn't what makes a family photo meaningful. Connection does. Some of my favorite images have happened after a snack break, during a game of tag, while someone was collecting rocks, or in the middle of a giggle that started because nothing went according to plan.
Your kids don't have to impress me. They just have to be themselves with you.
Here's something else worth knowing. As a Boise family photographer, I don't believe every family should have the same session. Some kids thrive at golden hour. Others are melting down by 7:30. Some families love hiking into the foothills. Others would rather make pancakes on a Saturday morning or share huckleberry ice cream in McCall.
So we plan your session around your family, not around someone else's Pinterest board. If bedtime is sacred in your house, let's talk about it. If your little one needs time to warm up, we'll build that in. If your kids would rather throw rocks in a creek than smile at my camera, perfect. That's exactly the kind of story I love telling.
3. "I can't carry one more thing."
Honestly, this one might be the biggest.
Family photos aren't stressful because of the hour we spend together. They're stressful because they feel like one more thing on top of everything else. The outfits. The weather. The nap schedule. The location. The snacks. The shoes. The husband who forgot the time. The toddler who suddenly refuses to wear the outfit you lovingly picked out.
I see all of it. That's why my job as your Boise family photographer starts long before I pick up my camera.
I'll help you think through outfits. We'll choose a location that fits your family instead of forcing your family to fit the location. We'll plan around naps if we need to. I'll share every tip I've learned, because I want you to show up feeling like someone is helping carry the load.
But more than anything, I want to know what this season feels like. Tell me what you never want to forget. The stuffed bunny that goes everywhere. Popsicles on the trampoline. Sunday morning waffles. Your son insisting on rain boots with every outfit. Your daughter collecting every flower she can find.
Those little details might seem ordinary today. They're the moments your children will treasure someday. That's the story I want to tell.
You already do enough. Let me take this one.
4. "I'm scared the photos won't feel like us."
This might be the truest reason I photograph the way I do.
Because your story deserves more than standing in a pretty field, looking at the camera.
Maybe the field is your story. If that's your happy place, let's go.
But maybe your story is
Sunday morning waffles.
Backyard sprinklers.
The cabin your family visits every summer.
Grandma's garden with chickens running all around.
Building sandcastles.
Watching the sun disappear behind the Sawtooths around a campfire.
Whatever your family loves, that's where I want to meet you. Not a version of your family that photographs well in a field. The real one. So that when you look back on these, they don't feel like someone else's photos. They feel like yours.
5. "I'm afraid I'll wait too long."
This one rarely gets said out loud.
But I think it's the real reason most moms finally book.
Because one day you notice. Your toddler doesn't reach for your hand quite as often. The missing front teeth have grown back in. Your teenager is talking about college. Grandpa moves a little slower.
Life changes quietly. Until one day, it has.
That's why I believe your photographs deserve more than living on your phone. They deserve to be printed. Framed. Walked past every single day. Photos tucked away on a hard drive rarely become part of your family's story. The ones hanging in your hallway do.
That's why I care so much about helping families turn their memories into artwork. Not because every wall needs decorating. Because every childhood deserves to be remembered.
From One Mom to Another
If you've been waiting for life to slow down, for everyone to cooperate, for the house to be cleaner, for the kids to be older, for you to feel more like yourself...
Let this be your permission to stop waiting.
You don't need a perfect family. You don't need Pinterest-worthy outfits. You don't need kids who smile on command. You don't even need to know where your session should be. That's what I'm here for.
I'll help you choose the location. We'll plan around naps and bedtimes. I'll help with outfits and answer the questions you haven't thought to ask yet. And together, we'll create photographs that feel like your family, not someone else's.
Because your children won't remember whether everything went perfectly. They'll remember how deeply they were loved.
And one day they'll walk past those photos in your hallway, thousands of times as they grow, and they'll see how you held them. Where your family loved to be. What home felt like.
If your heart tugged a little reading this, that's usually a sign.
Let's plan a session that feels like your family- no pressure and no perfection required.
Because your life, exactly as it is today, is worth remembering.
